What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the belief that there are reflex, (a reflex is when stimulation of one point brings about a response in another area), areas in the feet and hands which are believed to correspond to all organs and parts of the body. Some practitioners may also include work on points found in the face and ears.

When pressure is applied to the reflex points it is thought to stimulate the movement of energy and so help restore homeostasis (balance) in the whole body.

Reflexology works on an individual basis and may alleviate and improve symptoms such as everyday stress and tension.

Reflexology can run alongside but should never replace conventional medicine.

A Reflexologist does not diagnose or give medical advice.

Reflexology treatment

On your first visit you will be asked about your medical history, reasons for having Reflexology and also asked to sign a consent form. This allows the Reflexology treatment to be personalised to you for the best results.

You will be asked to remove footwear and socks before the practitioner begins the precise Reflexology movements. The particular types of movements involved require the application of an appropriate amount of pressure using the thumb and fingers.

What do Reflexology treatments feel like? Will it Tickle or hurt?

No, a Reflexology treatment should never tickle or hurt. Firm, but not painful pressure is used while working the reflex points on the feet. Sometimes a reflex point may be a little tender to the touch, just let your therapist know and they will use a lighter touch over that certain reflex.

How can Reflexology help support you through your conception journey?

Reflexology can help support you both physically and emotionally if you are trying to conceive. It can provide you with a safe place to take time out, relax and reduce stress. This in itself can be beneficial for conception.

According to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE)

  • Over 80% of couples in the general population will conceive within 12 months if the woman is aged under 40 years and they do not use contraception and have regular sexual intercourse. Of those who do not conceive in the first year, about half will do so over the next 12 months

  • Around 1 in 7 couples in the UK seek advice about difficulties in getting pregnant. If you and your partner have been trying to get pregnant for more than 12 months, you should both be offered investigative tests.

What do Reflexology treatments do?

Reflexology is a holistic therapy and as such treats the whole person taking into account physical and non physical factors to create an individual and personalised treatment.

The only way to find out if Reflexology works for you is to try it! You may find yourself feeling less stressed, more relaxed and sleeping better, which in turn will improve your mood and sense of well being.

How many treatments will I need?

A single treatment may be sufficient, but it is best to discuss this with your practitioner. For instance, if you have long standing physical, emotional or spiritual issues, a series of sessions may be beneficial. In general if you find that helpful changes are taking place, it is a good idea to continue treatment.

As a guide, a course of weekly treatments over a period of six weeks is recommended followed by treatments either every two weeks or monthly as a maintenance programme.
